The essential Business Growth Foundations

By Zed Vakil · August 2026 · about a 3-minute read

Why nailing your purpose, business hypothesis, target market, ideal client profiles and value propositions is critical before you even try product-market fit, and what happens if you go to market when they are not.

Most growth problems are not sales problems. They are growth foundation problems.

When revenue stalls, or worse goes backwards, the instinct is to reach for more: more marketing, more outreach, a new website, a bigger pipeline. Sometimes that works.

More often it does not. Spending more on top of a foundation built on sand, one that was never set, is why the results neither come nor last, and nobody can quite say why. Then: more expensive salespeople, more blame, more nothing.

Foundations before growth

The Business Growth Foundations Framework© exists to put the order right. It insists on getting a small number of things clear before any money is spent: what the business is genuinely best at, which markets it serves, who the buyer really is, and what that buyer will pay to have solved.

From purpose to proof

The sequence runs from purpose to proof. It begins with the founder’s Passionate Purpose, sharpens into a clear new business hypothesis, and turns that into a curated target market and differentiated value propositions designed for real personas, in the language of problem-solving commercial outcomes rather than another gushing service description.

Only once those propositions have been tested against what clients are actively trying to solve, through product-market-fit discovery, does the work move to bespoke go-to-market activity.

Why the order matters

Skip the foundations and every later decision gets harder, multiplying problems. Messaging drifts because nobody agreed what the business is best at. Campaigns underperform because they speak to a market that was never defined. Sales stalls because the proposition was assumed rather than proven. Fix the foundations and the same activity starts to compound, because it is finally pointed at the right people with the right promise.

One client, a specialist consultancy with genuine, stellar credentials, had no repeatable way to turn legacy expertise into new business. The answer was not more outreach and more rejections. It was diagnosing the gaps in their Business Growth Foundations first. They worked on their purpose, which fuelled their hypothesis, clearly defined their client type, identified six personas, designed compelling value propositions, tested through product-market-fit interviews, and only then built a go-to-market strategy on top.

Credibility is not a pipeline. The foundations are what convert one into the other.
